Ljubljana Festival

From 1 January to 30 June 2008, Slovenia will be the first of the new members of the enlarged European Union to hold the Union's presidency. During this time, Ljubljana will host a series of official meetings and interesting events.

According to European Union regulations, each member country is to preside over the Union for a six month period. The presiding country guides the work of the Council of the European Union's working bodies at all levels, represents the Council of the European Union in relation to other European Union institutions, and represents the European Union in the international community.


Upcoming events

Apart from a series of important international meetings, Ljubljana will host a number of interesting events well worth attending. The list of events shown below is not full yet, but will be updated as soon as more details are available.


Slovenska cesta road events
16 May - 21 June,Slovenska cesta road, the section between the Ajdovščina square and the crossroads with the Šubičeva cesta road
On selected weekends during Slovenia's presidency of the European Union, the section of the Slovenska cesta road located in the city centre will be turned into Ljubljana's major promenade area hosting a diverse programme of events intended for people of all generations.

Alive - outdoor photographic exhibition
23 March - 29 May; Tivoli park - Jakopičevo sprehajališče
The world-renowned photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand, who achieved fame for his aerial photography exhibition The Earth from Above, is an exponent of sustainable development, which would enable the preservation of natural resources and beauties of the Earth. Exhibition Alive which was prepared by members of his international photographic foundation GoodPlanet.org, features wildlife photographs accompanied by facts and figures on human intervention in nature and issues related to the survival of animal species.

The concert is organized by the Office of the European Commission in Slovenia and the Municipality of Ljubljana.

500th Birth Anniversary of Primož Trubar
To commemorate the 500th birth anniversary of Primož Trubar (1508-1586), the father of the written Slovenian language and the leader of the Protestant movement in Slovenia, the year 2008 has been announced Trubar Year. The main commemoration ceremony, set to be held in Ljubljana in June, is going to be attended by the mayors of the cities where Trubar lived and worked.

Ljubljana Festival 2008
19 June - 28 August; various venues
This year, in view of the Slovenian presidency of the European Union, the Ljubljana Festival, an international summer festival traditionally opening in early July, will begin as early as on 19 June.

The festival's opening night will see a concert by London's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Sir Andrew Davis. Other world-class artists to perform at the festival include the orchestra of Milan's La Scala theatre under the conduction of Myung-Whun Chung, the French National Orchestra under Kurd Masur's baton, St. Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra led by Valery Gergiev (two concerts), the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, conducted by Zubin Mehta, and many others.
